A couple of years ago someone bought an S to SCH which had a modification to the bonnet hinge so it would open fully vertically without the car being jacked up. It seemed to pivot pretty much about the lowest point on the nose rather than a foot or so it which it is by standard. Loads of pictures were taken but not by me so I have no idea how they did it!

Does anyone have a picture or information on the mod?

Cheers,

Tom

I seem to remember it being on Jens car (from Germany)?? I may be wrong (probably) - so if anyone has any photos of his car (engine bay) from SCH2011 they should show the hinges. THe car generated a lot of interest so someone, somewhere, should have the photos.

Yes it was the German car at SCH last year...the one with half the engine bay missing (ie he removed all the Sh*t leaving a clean smart arrangement)

Here's a couple of photos from my web site (still the best, see?) which show the setup on Jens' car.

The standard hinge pivots at the chassis end. That means that, as the back of the bonnet goes up, the other end follows an arc centred on the chassis mounting, pushing the front downwards into the ground.

The first photo is similar to Mark's, and shows how the hinge pivots at the BONNET end, so the front of the bonnet follows a tighter arc, so goes down less, as the back of the bonnet goes up. Jens' hinge is also longer so that reduces the downward travel of the front as well, with this setup, by moving the centre of rotation even further forward.

The second photo shows the pivot bolt at the bonnet end. It also shows how the front bit of the hinge slides over the back bit, with a retaining pin. Take out two pins, disconnect one multi plug connector, remove bonnet. Very clever.

This last photo shows the whole setup including the two gas struts to hold the bonnet up.

It's an S3C, doesn't have them

Well you learn something everyday. I assume it uses a MAP sensor then rather than Alpha-N. can you convert a non cat car to use MAP? Would need lambda sensors though I guess.

Aye, uses MAP & lambda sensors to determine fuelling etc.

Might be a different ECU, or different software, so not sure how easy it would be to convert (or if there are any benefits other than a determination to fit cats, that most S3C owners are removing).

Hi Tom,
Once you've succeeded in this, I reckon you should consider a production batch, I think a lot of guys out there would be very interestedsmile
Just a thought.

To be fair, I didn't actually say " 1 for me please ",
I only suggested that Tom consider the idea.
So I forgive you Gary.
Over to Tom then. thumbup
